Eight Months With Ruby!

Remember me? I used to blog around here. One of these days I'll get back into the swing of things, I promise :). Enough about me though, Ruby turned 8 months old yesterday! Her first year of life is flying by so fast. Pretty soon we'll have to start planning a birthday party for her. I'm not ready for that yet!

This past month has definitely been an exciting one for Ruby. She learned how to go from being on her belly to sitting up all by herself. She also learned how to clap, high five, & my personal favorite, dance! It's seriously the cutest thing ever. Ruby has been pretty grumpy lately, most likely from teething. Her gums feel hard & swollen, but then again we thought that last month too.. So who knows?! We're just winging this whole parenting thing ;).

Dancing! Haha
Ruby is still obsessed with Murphy. He's not so sure about her though. He likes her unless she starts "petting" him, aka pulling his hair haha. I'm trying to teach her that we have to be gentle & use soft touches with Murphy but who am I kidding, she's a baby & still has no idea what I'm saying! Teach 'em young though, right?

Ruby is also trying to crawl. She can't figure out this one leg yet that keeps getting stuck under her bottom. The other leg has the right idea, but she still can't figure out how to maneuver the other leg out to start moving. She has though, attempted to pull up on stuff-- which results in face plants & tears. Growing up is hard work! Pretty soon we're hoping she'll say "Mama" & "Dada" (obviously "Mama" first!). Ruby is still the happiest little girl ever. She loves to smile & thinks her parents are all that & a bag of chips!

My loves!

Happy 8 months, Ruby girl! We love you so!

Seven Months With Ruby!

Ruby turned 7 months old on Friday & I can't believe it! My sweet little girl is growing up so fast. I'm trying to take in each day with her & just soak it up. She's getting pretty clingy these days, so it's hard to get things done when she's not napping, but I love hanging out with her so it's fine ;).

This past month, Ruby learned how to sit up on her own. She doesn't have any teeth yet but her gums are swollen & I've seen little white dots pop up on her gums. We just got back from Ruby's first road trip to Dallas the other day! She traveled great, but sleeping in a hotel was not her cup of tea haha! She didn't want to go to sleep at her usual bed time (even though she was super tired), & after she finally fell asleep, she woke up every few hours. It felt like the newborn days all over again. I was worried that once we got home, Ruby would continue the trend of not sleeping well, but she's done great getting back into her routine.

While in Dallas, Ruby also started to get up on her knees. She doesn't quite know what to do yet when she's on them, but I feel like she'll start to realize what she's doing before long. I can't believe it's almost that time for her to be mobile!

Ruby is still eating lots of baby food & is doing good with it. We are about to try some new foods this week (stage 2!) so that will be exciting for her, I'm sure :). She is still the happiest, smiliest baby I've ever seen. She is the center of attention anywhere we go. I took her to the grocery store yesterday & had multiple people stop to look at her & talk about how adorable she is. I mean really, can you blame them?.. She's the cutest!

Happy 7 months, Ruby June! We love you so!

Mama, Enjoy Your Dirty Shirt

As I was looking in the mirror the other day, I saw my shirt & noticed quite a few new "spots" that weren't there when I put my clothes on that morning. When I put my clothes on for the day, they were perfect. They hadn't been spit up on yet. They hadn't had snot rubbed all over them. And they definitely didn't have other things on them that I had to question.

No, my clothes were clean.

Mama_enjoy_your_dirty_shirt

That is until I picked my daughter up & she spit up on them. And then rubbed her snotty little nose on them. And then she spewed baby food on them.

As I was looking at my shirt, I got mad at first because I was annoyed that I had to clean up the mess she had made all over my "nice shirt." I thought, "Ugh, I can't wait until the day I have a clean shirt again."

And then I stopped.

I realized, one day I'm going to miss my messy shirt. Sure, it might be kind of nice to have clothes that don't have stains on them. But those little stains were made by my sweet, smiley 6 month old daughter. One day, she'll be 16 & too cool rub her snotty nose on me (if she still does that, I may have to teach her how to use a tissue properly). But nonetheless, my point is, one day she's going to grow up. I'll no longer have spit up or snot on my shirt. And most likely, I'm going to miss it.

I think as moms, we often wish away our time. We say, "I can't wait until my child can play by themselves." Or "I can't wait until my child is potty trained." & so on & so forth. But what we're doing is ultimately not enjoying the here & now. We're not enjoying those sweet moments with our babies that will be gone in the blink of an eye. We're taking for granted the time that God has given us, & we're wishing it away because we think that the future looks brighter than today.

Yes, we may be in a harder season right now, wiping spit up off our shirts, but that time is slowly slipping away.

So as I started to clean my shirt off the other day, I decided that I'm going to "wear it proudly." No, I'm not going to be a slob (at least I'm not going to be most of the time ;) ), but I'm not going to be ashamed of it. I'm going to be thankful for it. Because there are a lot of women out there who wish they had spit up on their shirts that can't. And there are other women who wish they still had their baby's snot on their shirts, but their kids are too old now.

For now, I'll embrace my dirty shirt. I'll even enjoy it, because today is a gift. Tomorrow, Ruby will be one day older. So I think I'll enjoy today.

Six Months With Ruby!

Not sure how, but Ruby is 6 months old today! It's hard to believe that half a year ago, I held her in my arms for the first time. I literally feel like I just had her last month, but at the same time, I can't remember what my life was like before she was here. Ruby is the happiest baby I've ever seen. Sure, she cries & screams sometimes, but she smiles SO much! She is such a joy & will instantly make your day better, I promise.

Ruby finally mastered rolling from back to tummy last week so now she's super mobile. I can leave her in one spot, turn my back for a minute & she's somewhere completely different. We started baby-proofing some of the house already & we're hoping to finish off that task this weekend. She is super close to sitting up on her own. She can do it for a few seconds on her own with me ready to catch her. Ruby loves to read, sing & "pet" Murphy. She also loves to put anything & everything in her mouth, especially my hair ha. She is doing good at eating baby food-- she's tried cereal, peas, green beans, carrots, sweet potatoes, pears & then apples for the first time today! Right now, she's not a huge fan of fruit (which I really don't like fruit at all, I prefer veggies) but obviously, that could change.

Ruby went to her 6 month check up on Monday & she's in the 50th percentile again in height, weight & head! That same night, she slept in her own room for the first time. Those of you who follow me on social media may have saw that I was a little bit of a wreck that night. As I was feeding her before bed & rocking her, I just cried. Not because I was scared to leave her in her room (she's already been taking naps in there), but because somehow this sweet little 7 pounds & 13 ounces baby grew to be 15 pound & 10 ounces in the blink of an eye.

This baby girl is the sweetest.

Happy 6 months, Ruby June! We love you so much!

Nap Time Chit-Chat

Aww.. See my sweet Instagram Husband in the window of this pic? ;)
Carseat/Stroller Set: Graco (similar)

Always sucking on her fingers.
Sunglasses: Charming Charlie | Top: Tobi | Leggings: Old Navy (sold out, but similar) | Shoes: DSW (similar)

Necklace: Hey June | Top: Tobi | Leggings: Target | Shoes: Old Navy
Currently Ruby is taking a nap which seems to be the only time I can get anything done lately. Not that I'm complaining. I love hanging out with her. Sometimes though, I have a list of a million things to do (such as clean my house.. ugh, the constant struggle) & I feel like I never get anything done. Seriously, I think every day when Andrew gets home I tell him, "Well, I was going to get more done today BUT..."

Life in the Cunningham Fam has been kind of hectic lately. We're adjusting to some new changes in our lives & trying to continue to make time for each other. That's also a constant struggle for parents too I suppose. I recently read this book & highly recommend it for newer mamas who are trying to keep marriage a priority. It's a 21 day challenge.. Most of the things in the book are things we used to do when we were dating our spouse, but now that we're married & have kids, we don't "feel the need" to do those things anymore. It definitely has changed my perspective on choosing to love Andrew daily. Because let's be real, sometimes it's hard to be nice & loving when your kid just spit up on you or you've had a million blowouts that day.

Speaking of "kids", Ruby is possibly on the verge of teething (?). I really don't know though. Last night she was running a slight fever & just wasn't acting herself so we decided to keep her home from church. And then before bed, she wasn't running a fever & acted fine. Her doctor gave me some advice & signs on teething so I don't want to rush to any conclusions that she might be teething & then she's not. (#FirstTimeMomProbs) Nonetheless, I guess she'll be teething sooner or later & we'll get to experience that adventure.

For those of you wondering about Murphy, he's doing great. He's currently at the groomer, having the time of his life. He loves going because all of the ladies in there think he is the cutest thing ever & he knows it. Seriously guys, he walks in there STRUTTING. He's so funny.

Well, that's all for some nap time chit-chat because Ruby is about to wake up!
Happy Thursday, y'all!

And P.S. All of my tops from today's post & Monday's post are from a new shop I found called Tobi! Check them out!

Ruby's Favorite Children's Books

Ruby's_favorite_books

Top: Tobi | Jeans: American Eagle | Teething Necklace: The Vintage Honey Shop (sold out, but found here) |
R's bodysuit: Carters | Pants: Carters (sold out, but found here) | Headband: Boutique | Moccasins: Classic Dot
I love children's books. I've pretty much always had an obsession with them. So when Ruby came along, I already had quite a collection, but I received so many more at baby showers! Every day, I try to make it a habit to read with Ruby (& when I say "with" I mean, she really does "read" along with me!). I'm a big fan of the Read Aloud campaign which believes you should read to your child at least 15 minutes every day. And what do you know, March is Read Aloud Month! So today, Ruby & I decided to share with you our favorite children's books right now.

Side note: These books are board books which are perfect for those eager babies who want to put everything in their mouths! :)

Llama Llama Red Pajama
We've fallen in love with the Llama Llama series. I'm so sad that the author, Anna Dewdney, passed away recently but I hear her final book is going to be released soon. Seriously guys, these books are so fun & catchy, I have a blast reading it with Ruby!

5 Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed
I actually starting "singing" this all the time when I was changing Ruby's diaper & she always giggled! Now she loves reading the book & thinks I'm hilarious when I say, "No more monkeys jumping on the bed!"

Pete the Cat: Wheels on the Bus
Pete the Cat has always been a favorite of mine, so this is a great one for Ruby's age group. It's a little bit of a remake of the classic "Wheels on the Bus." It's definitely a fun one!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar
I remember reading this one as a kid! Ruby loves when the caterpillar eats through all of the "junk food" because she can flip through those little flaps easily! Eric Carle is one of my favorite children's book authors. Anything he writes is great.

I've always had this book, but it didn't really get to me like it does now that I'm a mom. When Mama Raccoon kisses Chester's palm of his hand, it melts my heart. Ruby loves it when I kiss her hand too while reading it!

What are you & your kids' favorite children's books?

Five Months With Ruby!

R's dress: Old Navy (sold out but similar HERE) | R's tights: Old Navy (sold out but similar HERE) | R's shoes: Classic Dot | R's 5 months sticker: Sticky Bellies
Five months already?! I seriously can't believe it. I feel like I just had Ruby a few weeks ago. I know she's still only a few months old, but I'm loving this stage right now. Ruby is pretty chill for the most part-- except recently at restaurants & when she's hungry or sleepy. She is recognizing faces now so she likes to hang around "Mom" &"Dad" more than others sometimes ha! Ruby is also rolling over more & more everyday. She's only rolled from back to tummy in her crib a couple of times, but she rolls almost daily from her tummy to back. Ruby is starting to hold toys in her hands & reach for stuff more. She has a new love for her teething ring & tries to put anything & everything in her mouth.

This past month we started cereal & she eats it like a champ! Although, most of it gets all over her hands & her face! :) She has the habit of sticking her hands in her mouth right after I give her a bite.. It gets everywhere! It's usually easiest just to let her eat only in her diaper so then we can wipe her off or bathe her. She really is doing well with it & we're probably going to introduce veggies & fruits sometime soon!

Ruby LOVES "petting" Murphy! He's super soft so I think she loves that about him. Today she grabbed his paw & was trying to put it in her mouth (ha!), but don't worry guys, I caught her in time. Murph was looking at me like, "Mom, make her stop." He likes her (we think) but he's not so sure about her sometimes & he gets this annoyed look on his face when she cries. It's pretty humorous because it's like he's telling us, "Is there a fee to ship her back? I'll cover it for you guys."

Ruby smiles all the time. She really is a happy baby. She has her moments where she screams & cries, but she's seriously such a joy to have in our lives. I can be having the worst day ever & she'll smile or laugh at me & it's impossible not to light right up. She's the best.

We love you, Ruby June! Happy 5 months of life!

The Transition to Motherhood

I'm almost 5 months postpartum & I finally feel like I'm starting to get the hang of things. I'm not completely oblivious to know that tomorrow, "things" may be totally different, but as I'm writing this today, I'd like to think that Ruby & I are starting to get into the groove of mother/daughter-hood.

My undergraduate degree is in Child Development. So basically when I got pregnant last year I thought to myself, "This is what I spent four years in college for. I'm totally prepared for this." Ha! Everything I "thought" I knew about raising a child went out the window at 3:43 PM on October 5, 2016.

I soon realized I had no idea about breastfeeding, diaper rashes, what each cry meant & so much more. I really tried to prepare myself before Ruby came by reading books, taking classes, etc., but after she got here & we came home from the hospital, I had one thing on my mind... SLEEP. Everyone tells you before you have a baby, "You better sleep while you can!" And while I understand what they're trying to say, I still had the mentality that sleep doesn't carry over. Man, I wish it did. (Of course, I'd like to meet the woman out there who has slept amazingly the last few weeks of pregnancy, because I was miserable & even if I wanted to carry over "extra" sleep before having Ruby, I couldn't.)

The first month of Ruby's life was the absolute hardest month of my life so far. I was determined to breastfeed & thought I was doing spectacular until we took Ruby to her first doctor appointment when they told us she had lost more weight than they wanted her to after leaving the hospital. So we went home & stuck to a strict two hour feeding schedule. Convinced that she "felt heavier," two days later we went for a weight check where she had lost a pound. I tried to keep my cool for both of those appointments, but the moment we got in the car, I lost it. It's amazing all of the hormones your body throws at you right after you have a baby! I'm also pretty confident I cried continuously throughout the first month... Fun stuff, those hormones!

So, we continued a strict two hour feeding schedule (& when I say strict, I mean, I was pretty crazy about it) plus we supplemented with some formula each time. Even though I was determined to breastfeed, I was totally okay with supplementing as long as it meant that Ruby was healthy.

And therefore, THAT began the longest month of my life.

Once Ruby finally hit birth weight though, we stopped using formula. I fully understand why people don't breastfeed. I was considering stopping when Ruby just wasn't gaining weight. Andrew said to me multiple times, "Do you want to stop? It's okay to stop." And I'm so grateful that I had a person in my life that told me it was okay to stop. Because it is. But I told myself I was going to keep trying, & I'm proud to say, I stuck with it. There have been so many moments where I'm crying because she won't eat & she's crying because she's mad at me for trying to "make her." It's been a journey to say the least. I know so many women who absolutely love it, & for me personally, there's only been a handful of moments when I'm feeding her & I think, "Okay, this is pretty great." I will say though, how awesome it is that God designed our bodies to be able to feed our babies. It's pretty amazing.

The transition to motherhood hasn't been as easy as I pictured in my mind. Google HAS TO know I'm a new mom because I literally Google everything. Motherhood is something completely new for me. Daughterhood is something completely new for Ruby. It's a daily learning experience. We find out what works like reading books & singing before nap time, & what doesn't work like trying to give her a bath without Andrew here (let's just say we were both in tears the other night).

I have my moments, Ruby has hers. Some days I get things accomplished, other days I'm lucky if I brush my teeth. Okay, just kidding, I always have to brush my teeth. Having a kid changes everything. Your marriage changes. Your friendships change. Your hobbies change. Your free time changes. YOU change. But I'm starting to learn how to adapt to these changes.

The bottom line is this: I absolutely love being a mom. I tell Andrew all the time that I feel like I was made for this. It's really, really hard work (like I think I should be getting paid more ha!) but for today, at this moment in time, I think I'm starting to get the hang of it.

Four Months with Ruby!

Four_months_with_Ruby

I'm such a bad blogger... I totally skipped my "3 months with Ruby" post & I covered up her 2 month post with a "life lately" one. *sigh* Such is life with a baby I suppose. I'm currently writing this while we're doing tummy time... If that's not multitasking, I don't know what is!

So in case you didn't know, I'm absolutely obsessed with my daughter. She's the coolest. Don't get me wrong, being a mom is super hard sometimes, but it's definitely worth it. Ruby rolled over for the first time last week & Andrew & I freaked out (here's the video on Instagram in case you missed it)! She's been so close to rolling for a while now & I've been ready to catch it on video. When she did it for the first time though, it was like she did it in slow motion which gave me enough time to make sure I caught it (because I almost missed it!).

Ruby is a drooling machine these days. She loves sucking on her fingers which is usually how she puts herself to sleep now. When we do use the pacifier, it usually just consists of her chewing on it ha. We went to her pediatrician for her 4 month checkup on Monday & she did great! Ruby is in the 50th percentile in everything.. height, weight & head! Her doctor went ahead & gave me all of the info on baby food-- not sure how I feel about my baby growing up so fast! We haven't tried any rice cereal yet, but maybe soon we'll see how it goes.

Ruby loves music, reading, smiling, being held (especially by her Daddy) & staring at Murphy. She also is starting to do better with bath time finally! She hasn't screamed in a couple of weeks so that's an improvement ha! Ruby really is such a joy. I love watching her grow & learn.

Ruby_4_months

We love you, Ruby June! Happy 4 months of being on this earth!

And here is her 3 month picture since I missed posting it! :)

Signed, Sealed, Delivered: Basic Invite!

Basic_Invite

This is a sponsored post by Basic Invite. All opinions are my own.

Call me "old fashion" but I love sending cards. I also love receiving them. Over the years, I've sent my fair share of cards... high school graduation announcements, wedding save the dates, wedding invitations, college graduation announcements, Christmas photo cards & now birth announcements.

Pretty much every major life event, I've always sent a card. It's a way to personally keep in touch with someone you see on a regular basis or someone you haven't seen in years. So I instantly fell in love with Basic Invite. Basic Invite creates the perfect invitations, announcements & photo cards for any occasion instantly. One of my favorite things about them is they have almost unlimited colors! When I was getting married, I had the perfect lilac/lavender/light purple color in my head that I wanted, but it was so hard to find. I had to take around my color swatch everywhere I went. But at Basic Invite, they have practically any color you can think of!

Basic_Invite_Colors

Not only that, but they have over 40 different colors of envelopes that make your invitation stand out before it's even opened. And the BEST thing about Basic Invite's envelopes is that they peel & seal securely & QUICKLY! That means no licking, glueing or "wash clothing" (let's be real, we've all done it!) the envelopes.

Birth_Announcement_Option

And if you're a perfectionist like me, Basic Invite is one of the few websites that allows you the ability to order a printed sample of your actual invitation, announcement or photo card so you can see how it will print as well as the paper quality before you ever have to place your final order! Can't get any better than that, right? So for all you high school & college seniors who are thinking about how you need to start picking out graduation announcements for this spring, there's no better option than Basic Invite!

Graduation_Announcement_Option

One of my favorite details on cards right now is the foil stamped option which Basic Invite has a huge variety of. You can even get the foil on business cards & personal stationary! Basic Invite has so much to offer & I genuinely think they have so many choices for any occasion. Right now on their website, they're even offering 15% off everything using the code 15FF51!

So next time you're needing an invitation, announcement or any other card in between, check out my new favorite company, Basic Invite! :)

Happy New Year + Life Lately!

Where has the time gone? Here I am again, slacking in the blogging world.. Wishing I was writing more. Most mamas out there know that time is tough. I feel like I'm constantly feeding, changing, soothing or playing with Ruby. In my "free time" I try to get caught up on the housework that is clearly falling behind as one could tell by looking at the pile of dishes in my sink or the clean laundry that I need to fold & put away. But I read this great article last night & told myself that it's okay that all of that stuff is just sitting there, because time with Ruby is short & I'm going to enjoy her little coos & giggles while I can. Even right now when I felt like I had a minute to write, I can hear her in her crib "talking" & it makes me want to go in there & swoop her up.

So since it's been forever since I've blogged, I figured I'd play "catch up" with you all!

Ruby turned two months old on December 5th. Tomorrow she'll be 3 months old.. SO crazy!

Ruby_2_months_old

She's enjoying learning how to sit up & she rarely likes to be held like a baby anymore (which makes this mama just a little sad).

Ruby's_first_Christmas

She also enjoyed her first Oklahoma snow which consisted of some flakes that didn't stick to the ground at all, but that's ok!

Ruby's_first_snow

On December 18th, we dedicated Ruby to the Lord. We are so thankful that God entrusted us to be her parents & we are eagerly praying for the day that she realizes she's a sinner in need of a perfect Savior & trusts in Jesus Christ who is the only One who can do that. We're praying that we will show Ruby the love of Christ & raise her in a stable, Christian home!

Ruby's_dedication

Ruby had a great first Christmas! She even attempted (with the help of Mommy & Daddy) to open her own presents. Maybe next year she'll do it all by herself!

Christmas_2016

She's starting to learn how to hold stuff! She especially likes her rattle that we gave her for Christmas!

Ruby_holding_rattle

And then I just had to end on this stinking adorable picture of Ruby & Murphy today because who doesn't love pictures of babies & dogs?! I think they're going to be best friends!

Happy New Year, everyone! I hope you all have a wonderful 2017 & keep following this little blog of mine! :)
